Naughty Bear

I was excited for this game. I couldn't wait to beat the stuffing out of other teddy bears in an incredibly gruesome manner. Call me twisted. So you play as Naughty Bear and he is the only bear on paradise island not invited to a birthday party. The other bears all laugh at him so he plans on taking revenge. Sounds decent doesn't it. Well Alpha Protocol has taught me to deal with disappointment and this game sure is disappointing. The graphics are terrible. Maybe the developers were aiming for an art style out of some physchotic child's sketch book. Couple bad graphics with a horrible camera and the inability to lock on to other bears in order to kill them and you have the formula for disappointment. Maybe they thought, "Hey, the premise for this game is f***ing amazing and original we can just bs everything else". The narrator in this game is like Justin Bieber minus the high voice. You either love him or hate him. I loved the narrator. (Can't say the same for Bieber) I thought the narration was hilarious and had a good sense of incredibly dark humor. The other sounds in this game were mediocre. Why don't I hear tearing of cotton when I stab bears with machetes. Another point about this game, if it takes place on Paradise Island and has teddy bears why are there machetes all over the place. Anywho I can say that this game is definitely not for kids even though it appears so and it definitely shouldn't be on anyones shelf. 5/10.

Army of TWO: The 40th day

This game came out early this year and was highly anticipated. A lot of people assumed this would be great. You know what happens when you assume? Well this game does precisely that. It makes the characters seem like asses out of each other. The AI is still dumb as hell as it was in the first game and the plot is more unstructured. I like their outfits, the masks are cool. The guy with flames looks bad ass. The graphics are good, the voice acting is okay. The morality system is nice. Who doesn't enjoy customizing weapons? So how come the gameplay is f***ed up?! I didn't like the mechanics and the aggro thingy in the first game. I don't like them now. People who buy this won't be playing it to the 40th day, I was pissed on the 4th day. This game is good for some 'quick shoot some shit for 10 minutes" type thing. But it's not worth the buy and the cash. If you want to buy it so bad, split it with 8 friends and then take turns playing co-op. 5/10.

Funding for a Capture Card?

I'm debating with myself about whether or not to get a capture card so that I can do Video Reviews and record gameplays for the site and Machinima. A cap card costs 80 dollars though. Or I could just stick with written reviews and not upload anything to Machinima. I'm in a pickle.

Battlefield Bad Company 2

I recently shared my game of the year nominees for this year, and I thought that I should probably review the games that were on the list. This being one of them. The sequel doesn't continue the plot of the past game but the characters from the previous iteration are still in here. This game tries very hard to have a strong plot but it falls short yet again but I'm glad to see that it was better than the first one. The highlight of the plot is the charming characters that are occasionally hilarious and only want to fight this war because they have to. The characters have lost some of their charm (specifically Haggard) for the constant swearing that wasn't present in the first game. It made them seem less their own person and just another shit mouthed person in the military that isn't a person but a statistic. The gameplay and online mode retains it's fun from the first game and improves it with enhanced graphics and better gun sounds. The create a class option is present now and there are more rewards besides credits. The environment is still destructable and more blow-up-able than before. The sole problem with the gameplay is that there are occasional WTF moments where you may just instantly die with no in sight. This occurs in single player and online. One time I just hopped in a tank that had full health and it blew up instantaneously. WTF! Anyways, this was still a solid experience and fun to go back to and it deserves a 8.5/10.

Answering some FAQs

1. What is your review system?
I generally start at a 10 for a game and then I'll take off a .5 for every bad aspect. There is some leaway to this. Some games are just so huge that if I counted every bad detail, the game would have a lower score than what it actually deserved. I occasionally look at Metacritic to get an idea of what kind of title a certain game is and what score would be suspected of it. Sometimes I don't agree with Metacritic. I didn't enjoy Mass Effect as much as the bigger reviewers did.
2. Do you swear in your reviews?
I will use spurts of it. There are some words that I am discouraged to say. I'll swear minorly such as: shit, ass, hell, damn, bitch. I won't use any racial or ethnic slurs. I won't drop an F bomb but instead will type as F***. Anything that an actual journalist could get in trouble, is something that I won't do.
3. What games do you normally review?
Unlike paid reviewers I am not required to review bad games and I don't get the games for free. So most of the time I will review well marketed titles that are generally well received. I am curious about some lackluster games and will rent them and then compile my review about them.
4. What games do you own?
PS3- Assassin's Creed 2, Bioshock, Battlefield Bad Company 2, Call of Duty 4, Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2, DJ Hero, Grand Theft Auto 4, Fallout 3, Rock Band 2, Modnation Racers, The Orange Box, LittleBigPlanet, Infamous, Metal Gear Solid 4, Uncharted 2, Red Dead Redemption, Just Cause 2, NBA 2K10.
PC- Mass Effect 1 and 2, Left 4 Dead 1 and 2, Modern Warfare 2, Halo 3.
Wii- Super Mario Galaxy, Metroid Prime Trilogy, Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, Super Smash Bros Brawl, Super Paper Mario, Wii Sports Resort, Bully, Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games, Mario Party 8, Guitar Hero 3, Guitar Hero World Tour, Rayman: Raving Rabbids.

Just Cause 2

So, I was going through my games to find some I hadn't yet reviewed. I found a good one. (All my games are AAA titles btw, I rent the okay ones) If the year ended right now, this would be the best action game of the year. Just Cause 2 has you playing as U.S. army specialist Rico Rodriquez as you venture to the island of Panau to find out why Russia, Japan and China are so interested in this island. The gameplay in this is just awesome. The guy has a grappling hook that you can use to get to places. It also has a link feature that you can do to: hang an enemy from a ceiling, whip a car off the side of a bridge, carry some high explosives by helicopter, etc. The protagonist also always seem to have a parachute as well, which another element to the gameplay. Mix that with some guns, lots of vehicles and a large open world and you have a fricking amazing action game. I haven't really noticed a soundtrack in this game because I'm too immeresered with the gameplay. The story is okay, It's a very shallow, the American always wins, type story. With that said, this game has huge stereotypes about Americans, Russians, Chinese, Japanese, Spanish, Portugeuse and Australians. I being Austalian, did not really appreciate that. This game could offend. The voice-acting is shit. Why do all the Spanish people sound the same? But still this is a fun game and my action game of the year thus far. 8.5/10.

MW2: Stimulus Pack

From Left to Right: Bailout, Crash, Storm, Overgrown, Salvage

So as some of you may know, the Second Map Pack for MW2 called the resurgence pack has recently come out on Xbox Live. But I am a PS3 gamer so I have to wait a month before I can get the map pack, so I'm going to look at the first map pack. The Stimulus Pack. The price for this map pack is $15. That's a little too much for just 5 maps. The new maps are Storm, Salvage, and Bailout. They brought back two oldies but goodies from Cod4, Crash and Overgrown. I was an avid Cod4 player and Crash was one of my favourites so I enjoyed getting a nuke the first time I played Crash on here against the people who had no clue where everyone was cause they didn't play Cod4. I would say all the maps here except for Bailout (which is like an urban apartment block type map) are good. I enjoy Storm (Factory type place with Rain) and Salvage was pretty good as well. But again most of you will buy this for $15. I did the download sharing thing that you can do for PSN purchases and I split it with two other people so really I only payed $5 for this map pack. Which is the price that it should be worth. If you got this on PS3, you have the option to split it with four others. But if you're on Xbox or PC, you may have got this a month earlier but really your paying for overpriced maps and therefore you got the dick end again. So if your on PS3, you should split this with some friends. But if your not, wait for a price drop.

Modnation Racers

Mario Kart meets Littlebigplanet and what a reunion it was. The result: Modnation Racers. This game features the addictive kart racing of Mario Kart where you race and hit enemies with your items, then it has the creation things you would find in Littlebigplanet where you can create your own Mods (People), Karts and Tracks. The result it an amazing kart racing that you and friends can play every weekend to see who has the coolest creations and best racing skills. With that said this game supports up to 12 players online and four player splitscreen. If you wanna race against NPCs you can do that too. This game has a legitimately long and difficult career that has plenty of challenges and collectables to keep you busy for a while. The graphics in this game are very artistic and cutesy like in Littlebigplanet but there has been a few cases of frame rate drop online. The online is amazing regardless but it is also the biggest downside to this game. If you don't have an online connection the game won't let you play it. So if your internet is knocked out or you just don't have a hookup altogether guess what you won't be playing. Anyways the sound in this game is very good as well but I haven't really paid attention to it when I'm in a rage about how I went from 1st to 9th in five seconds. If you don't like to lose that much you will get a little pissed at this game. But even though I suck at this game, I still give it a 9/10.

Alpha Protocol

Alpha Protocol recently came out. I like guns and I like RPGs. So this game seems to be perfect for me. Wrong. I may like guns and RPGs but I don't like dated graphics and horrible gameplay. This game puts you in the shoes of the newest Alpha Protocol agent, Michael Thornton. The story and plot in this game are quite amazing but have been brought down by the poor cover system and glitchy gameplay. I get tired of trying to take cover behind a bench and I end up taking cover in front of the bench. This game plays out like a regular RPG. There's mission and things you can do on the side. But it's all very forgetable. I don't remember half the things that I did and I didn't really care about the plot that much. That's a bad step for an RPG. I played this on my PS3 and I was amazed at how bad the graphics were. If this supported Playstation Move it could pass for a Wii game based on the graphics. The VO I found was pretty solid but there are never any memorable lines like in games with terrific VO. (Which is every game that Nolan North is in) In the end a good story with good sound can't pick up the sloppy gameplay and aged graphics. I'm giving this a 6.5/10

The Best Gaming Console?

There is huge argument on video game forums about which console is the best for gaming. The argument always seems to be between 360 and PS3. Wii is never mentioned just because the wii has a poor graphics engine and has a library full of lackluster games. One of it's best games happens to be packaged with it. Nintendo fanboys will argue that Wii is the only one that has motion controls. Well, Sony and Microsodt are coming out with Playstation Move and Project Natal. So guess what Wii? Your out of the running. The PS2 is also never mentioned. No one wants to talk about a dying system despite the fact that it has some amazing titles. But those titles can't compare to nowadays so I guess the PS2 is out. Handhelds are in some debate but if someone is on the go odds are they are driving. Handhelds require two hands. So does driving. So the DS and PSP are out. The Gamecube and original Xbox are already dead systems and were inferior to the PS2. So it's implied that they're out. Now onto the big two. PS3 has better graphics and supports blu-ray. 360 doesn't. 360 has a better online and more people playing. But the online is paid for and Xbox had been out a year and a half longer. Ps3 exlusives are God of War 3, Modnation Racers, Uncharted 1 & 2, Ratchet and Clank, MGS4, iNFamous, Heavy Rain and Littlebigplanet. 360 has Gears, Halo, and Left 4 Dead. But they are all shooters. If I wanted to do nothing but shoot, I would join the army. Also everybody has facebook nowadays. So that means that everyone has a computer. PS3 exclusives are solely on PS3. 360 exclusives are also on PC. So why buy a 360 for the exclusives if you have a PC. So it appears that the 360 is out. But does PS3 win? No matter what you play you may think that your system is the shit, but it's never gonna be 8-bit. Unless you have virtual console on wii. But the wii is already out of the running and trying to own all those virtual console titles would be a lot of money and harddrive space. But if you have an emulator on PC you could play these oldies and have them for free. But PC is too moddable and requires you to get specific software for specific games. So what is the conclusion? PS3 and PC are tied for the best gaming consoles. But everybody has a PC so if your going to the store to buy a gaming console to be plugged into your tv, buy a PS3. If you disagree with me, comment.

Super Mario Galaxy

Okay, so Super Mario Galaxy 2 has come out recently. This has caused me to look back at the first one before I get that one. This was a good game to go back to. Mario once again has to save Princess Peach from Bowser. But they're not just in the Mushroom Kingdom anymore, they're in space. This adds many exciting gameplay elements to an already fun type of gaming. This is platforming at it's best. Couple with pretty amazing graphics (for the wii) and some catchy tunes and you're in for an 'out of this world' type experience. So if the gameplay is superb and the graphics and sound are good, could there be anything wrong with this game? Yes, yes their is. Mario games are very cliched, just save the princess and defeat Bowser by getting stars along the way. If these games didn't have very clever plots in the first place why do the developers try to add all this stuff about the star people and some storybook thing that no one cares about. The camera sucks at times too. Besides that, this is a fun experience and is one of those five games that actually make owning a wii worthwhile. 8.5/10

Red Dead Redemption

I recently got my grimy hands on Red Dead Redemption. This game was made by Rockstar and therefore has a very GTA-esque feel to it. It takes place in the old west and you play as cowboy/mercenary/badass John Marshton. This game is pretty much a western version of GTA. You've got the very fun open world area to explore and when you commit crimes you build up a wanted meter and the deputies will chase you. One thing that's different about the wanted meter in this game is that once you escape the cops they won't just leave you alone like they did in GTA, you'll actually have a bounty on your head. I found that cool and a bit of a pain in the ass at the same time. Like GTA games, the plot and characters are very good and this game is very story driven. I think this game also has a very solid multiplayer experience where you can start a posse with your friends and just free roam, do gang wars, mexican standoffs, etc. One complaint I have is that I don't really like the horse riding mechanics and I rather just take the stagecoach instead of horsebacking to my destination. Still a good game. I give it a 9/10

GI JOE: Rise of the Cobra. The Game

If your aged 5-8 you will love this game. If your not this is probably the biggest piece of shit you can ever put into your game console. Since when is it okay for game developers to allow you to just run forward for a whole fricking level just holding down the trigger button. Top that off with crappy voiceovers and horrible graphics and you have found something that must be wiped with toilet paper so your ass will stay clean. Stay far away from this. If your gonna buy this, buy all the copies and burn them. 3/10. Whoever made this should be ashamed.

3D Dot Game Heroes

At first I thought this game was a buried treasure, but it turns out it had quite the internet following. I'm not surprised. In 3D Dot Game Heroes which is a PS3 exclusive, you play as a hero that has to save the kingdom of Dotnia from the darkness by finding the 6 sages and their orbs of power by going through dungeons. In each dungeon you will get special items that will help you to beat the boss. This sounds very familiar to me. Oh yeah, it's a fricking Zelda clone on a non-Nintendo console. It's like the phrase at the beginning of Will Ferrell's Anchorman. "This story is based on previous events and people. But we changed the names of the people and the events." This game is so much of a Zelda clone is not even funny. It plays exactly like old school Zelda. You've got the top down camera angle, when you have full health you're sword is badass and pretty much every element in a Zelda game is in here. I even stood in one spot for ten minutes trying to figure out what the hell I'm supposed to do. If you rip of the gameplay, you're obviously gonna get it right and this game is fun for being a clone. The graphics are eye popping and just brilliantly cool. Some of the jingles in this game I could live without (LIKE IN FRICKING ZELDA GAMES) but overall the sound is decent. If there were no Zelda, this game would be a 10/10. But because there is Zelda and this thing is a huge rip-off, I'm giving it an 8.5/10. If you're a Zelda fan and you have a PS3, check this out.

The Orange Box

The Orange Box is compilation game released by Valve that allows you to play the original Half Life 2 with enhanced graphics which was one of the best video games of the decade. It also has Half 2 episode add ons called Half Life 2 Ep. 1 and Half Life 2 Ep. 2 which expand on the story of Half Life 2 and add co-op play. Finally there is an awesome online shooter game that is called Team Fortress 2 and Portal which is a puzzle game where you get the character from point A to B through the use of a portal gun. If your a huge Half Life fan this is already a must buy. I'm not that big on the game but it still scores 9.3/10.

MAG

This Massive Action Game is a FPS online multiplayer only game. With the possibility of 256 players all in one match. MAG put through an experience that no other shooter has done. It makes you actually feel like your a soldier in war minus the whole actual death thing. MAG is largely focused on teamwork unlike games such as Mw2 where camping and solo streaking seems to be the trend. In Mw2 you might be able to take out 6 opposing guys all by yourself. But in MAG there is no way in hell you are going to be able take out 128 opposing enemies. MAG is unique in the fact that it's multiplayer drives the story of the game. You will choose between one faction: Raven, SVER, or Valor. Before each battle there will always be a little voiceover of why there is a battle and what you should be doing. This adds to the realism of actual war. Now although these 'wars' may seem more like a police action because they only last 20 minutes. This is about as close to war as a game has come. I have had a bit of framerate issues and graphics aren't amazing. The gameplay also isn't as addicting as Call of Duty or Bad Company but it is still fun and a contender for FPS game of the year. Another problem you may find is that it's PS3 exclusive. Still, war is hell and therefore this makes one hell of a game and scores a 8.5/10.

Call of Duty 4 Modern Warfare and Call of Duty Reflex

CoD 4 was a groundbreaker for FPS games. This was the first time that the game allowed to create your own custom classes and have a legitimate ranking system. Reflex is essentially the same game except for Wii. The original was for PS3 and 360. CoD 4 had pretty solid graphics. I wasn't totally amazed by them, I wanted more gore but the environments looked great. Reflex couldn't run some of the maps and some bits of the campaign had to be edited it out because it couldn't work the enhanced visuals of certain parts. The sound for both parts was good the music and VO were the same. The gameplay for CoD 4 was amazingly fun and addicting but I found that even though Reflex had the same idea in mind, is that the multiplayer seemed less intense because every so often a few people would drift off and being looking all over the place out of frustration with the wii controls. One of these games is good, the other's just amazing. CoD 4 scores a 9.2/10. Reflex is just like the wii, always inferior. It scored a 7.5/10.

Left 4 Dead

Okay, so Left 4 Dead 2 came out last year and I decided to take a peak at the first one. Now Left 4 Dead is a 360 exclusive title that has you submerged in a plot of unloading clips into zombies and surviving the horrors of the undead. This game is very similar to Resident Evil but it doesn't make you feel like your being bullshitted sometimes. This game has a strong emphasis on co-op and the shooting is just so addicting. I'm the type of person that loves games where when you kill someone. their body explodes. It makes the experience seem somewhat rewarding like "Yeah, I caused that stain in the couch". I found the dialogue and overall sound in this game to be humourous at times and well done. I feel (Call me a fanboy, idc) that this game would've done better on PS3 with the enhanced graphics and that Xbox guys would be missing their sole good exclusive title over PS3 owners. But hey, I still got to play the game and it's one hell of a game. I've probably capped about every 9/10 zombies.

Heavy Rain

Heavy Rain is a mystery game that depicts you as four different characters as they all try to discover who this Origami Killer is. You'll be pointing them up in the right direction. I can't quite describe Heavy Rain but the gameplay is all one-time events that can get really intense in certain situations. The game is non-mulitplayer and entirely plot driven which can be a little risky. What's unique about this game is that when your character dies, there is no GAME OVER screen. The game just goes along with it and that character actually died. Heavy Rain is probably one of those few games that people will be enthralled to watch while one person plays. This game is pure cinematics at it's best. The graphics rival Uncharted 2 and the voice acting does as well. 9/10. Point blank period.

God of War

If you were considering buying Dante's Inferno, just forget it. Go pick up the God of War Collection. I played the original God of War through the collection. In God of War you play as Kratos who has been assigned the task of killing Ares, the God of War. The events of this game have you slashing a lot of beasts from greek mythology, some platforming and seeing breasts. What more could you ask for? Me, I found it difficult to want to continue the game and I didn't really have the motivation for it. This game is a very good game but it doesn't exactly get you hooked. The graphics are very good and bloody and I found that the voice acting was a little mediocre. I always thought Kratos was one of those silent protagonists. The sound besides the V.O. was excellent. I wouldn't recommend this game for a buy unless you love these hack and slash types of games or are considering buying a game like this. This game is like Kratos' state of mind, it's a nightmare once in a while. It still scores a 8/10.

Assassin's Creed 2

Assassin's Creed 2 has you playing as Ezio, a young Italian man who seeks vegence for the wrongful execution of his father and brothers. The game is actually set in modern day time but through the use of a device called the Animus, you are sent back in time to see the memories of Ezio in the Renaissance Italy time period. First thing about this game is that it beats the hell out of the first Assassin's Creed. The gameplay is the same in most cases but the missions aren't repetitive as much anymore and you can actually make money and spend it on new weapons and armour or upgrade your Villa. The story is quite good and at times can be funny. My favorite line is when Ezio's Mother says to him, "Maybe you should focus more on your studies and focus less on getting vagina." Pardon my french but the main character Ezio is an asshole. Leonardo da Vinci makes numerous appearance in the game and invents weapons for Ezio. Every attempt Leonardo tries at befriending Ezio, Ezio igonores him and leaves. The game lacks no multiplayer which is always upsetting. I'm sure that the developers could've had a co-op mode where you kill a lot of guards or race to see who can kill the target first. The game is still excellent. My biggest problem was probably the graphics, because in the cutscenes the character's faces looked like they were from a wax museum. The voice acting is quite nice though. I'm sure many people will disagree with me for the score, but I give this games an 8.5/10.

Damnation

What's good to be said about Damnation? That's a tough question. Well, the name is pretty cool. Okay, you obviously know the game is crappy when my only compliment about it is that I like the name. For a game that sounds cool, it sure plays like sh**. The shooting is terrible, I aim for the enemy's head and I end up shooting them in the foot. The story is a load of bs. The game was so bad, I couldn't bring myself to play the 2nd level. Waste of a rental. Speaking of money, the retail price for this game is like $50. This should be one of the games that cub scouts hand out if you support their cause. The sound sucks and the multiplayer sucks because the game sucks so much that nobody has bought this suckish game and therefore there is no multiplayer to speak of. This is one of those games that should be burned to prevent people from getting their money robbed. They paid for entertainment not crap on a disc. 1/10, that's all I have to say.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2

This was easily the most anticipated and fastest selling game of all time. Why? Because it's awesome! The story is set a few years after the first Modern Warfare that was left with a cliffhanger ending about what happened to Soap. Well he survived. But you'll be playing as Roach. The single player campaign in this game by many is said to yet to be desired and over-the-top unrealistic. For example, in like one of the first levels you do a 100 ft jump on a snowmobile. The campaign is pretty short but I don't know why people are complaining about that, because the first Modern Warfare had a short campaign as well. The graphics have definitely improved and the sound is good. Hans Zimmer recorded the score and the Voice acting is good. Some lines are a little overused, so "stay frosty" for my next segment of the review. The multiplayer is the main attraction of this game. There are so many challenges and different ways you can customize your gun classes. It's just pure fun. The only downside is that the maps are designed for camping and you'll keep dying by the same bee-otch. Other than that, great game. "Stay frosty" because this scored a 9.2/10.

Fallout 3

When someone mentions Fallout 3, most people think, "Hell of a game". They would think that because is flipping amazing and the setting of the game might as well be hell. The game takes place about 200 years in the future and is set in Washington DC about 70 years into the aftermath of a nuclear war. Even though the bombs dropped a long time ago, there are still things mutated and f***ed up beyond belief trying to kill you.
This RPG has released from the vault and places you in the expansive universe of the wasteland. While the whole thing may be open world, the question how far while you make it in the world without getting killed. Even on the easy difficulty I found this game very difficult and long to complete. I had a blast (pun) playing this game, though. The graphics are very good escpecially when you have a "bloody mess" perk on and everything you kill ends up being, well... a bloody mess. The sound is excellent, I loved the voiceovers. The music from the 50s I didn't love so much but they fit the setting of the game. The story was kind of hazy at first but once you got into the game it was quite amazing. The VATS shooting is also very cool. VATS allows you to stop time and pinpoint a specific place to shoot.
Overall this game is definitely a must play. But if you don't own it and just rent it, you probably won't see it's full potential. There is also DLC, (unless you buy the GoTY edition) so there is tons of lasting appeal. This game scores a lucrative score of 9.6/10.
